Four hockey players suspended in Canada despite acquittal in rape case

Hockey Canada’s independent appeals panel has suspended four former junior national team players from international competition, despite their acquittal in July 2025 on criminal sexual assault charges.

Michael McLeod has been suspended until 2030, Dillon Dubé until 2028, Cal Foote until 2027, and Carter Hart until late November 2026. A fifth player implicated in the case, Alex Formenton, was also found to have violated Hockey Canada’s policies but was permitted to return to federation programs.

The case stemmed from a group incident at a hotel in 2018. Although the judge found the complainant’s testimony insufficiently convincing for a criminal conviction, the events triggered a national scandal. Canada’s Secretary of State for Sport Adam van Koeverden has described the case as a defining example of the toxic culture in men’s hockey that must drive reform across Canadian sport.
