Poland has approved a single nationwide procedure allowing civil registry offices to register same-sex marriages legally concluded in other countries. To facilitate this, the Ministry of the Interior introduced new document forms with three possible marital configurations: between a woman and a man, two women, or two men. This put an end to the absurd practice whereby officials were required to formally record one of the partners as being of the opposite sex.

At the same time, the decision requires Poland to recognize foreign marriage certificates only; it does not automatically allow same-sex couples to marry directly within Poland.
