In the US, the trial of the accused in the murder of a transgender woman has begun eight years after her killing

Dejanay Stanton, 24, was shot and killed in Chicago in 2018. Tremon Hill, who was in a relationship with her, is accused of her murder.

According to prosecutors, the man killed Dejanay because he was afraid someone would find out about their relationship. In court, their correspondence was presented, in which he demanded that she delete their photos and messages. Other evidence includes surveillance camera footage and the defendant’s clothing with traces of blood. The defence disputes the sufficiency of the evidence against him.

Dejanay’s family waited more than eight years for the trial to begin.

UPDATE: At the time this news was published, ABC7 Chicago reported, citing court documents, that Hill had been found not guilty.
