Designer Kisha Abdalla created the evening gown Layers of Life for Uganda’s contestant at the Miss World pageant. The concept of the dress metaphorically recreates the seven anatomical layers of tissue that surgeons cut through during a Caesarean section.
The idea came to the designer after her own experience of motherhood. Using medical materials as a reference, she recreated each stage of the surgical procedure through the silhouette, layers of fabric, and color palette — from the outer layers (skin and muscle) to the uterus and amniotic sac.
Through the design, the designer hopes to draw attention to the challenges of motherhood and the complexity of childbirth.
