In Nepal’s Madhesh Province, a three-year-old girl was found dead after a three-day search. Police have arrested nine people in connection with the suspected rape and murder.
The crime sparked protests and calls for tougher penalties for serious offences. After several days of demonstrations, the victim’s family met with government representatives. The authorities made a written commitment to review the relevant legislation and create a memorial in honour of the girl. The case has also prompted a wider debate over harsher penalties for minors convicted of rape or murder. At the same time, human rights activists have warned against introducing the death penalty.
Police have also faced accusations of negligence during the early stages of the investigation. Further outrage followed after a video showing one of the detained teenagers giving a statement was leaked on social media. Authorities identified a police officer involved in the leak and initiated action against him.
According to Nepal Police, more than 25,500 reports of rape and sexual abuse were filed in the country between July 2017 and July 2025. In more than 3,200 cases, the victims were girls under the age of 10.
