The Estonian parliament has elected 51-year-old Ülle Madise as the country’s next president. She will become the second woman to hold the office in Estonia’s history, after Kersti Kaljulaid. The newly elected president is scheduled to take the oath of office on October 12.
Madise holds a doctorate in law, previously served as legal adviser to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves, taught constitutional law, and helped develop Estonia’s internet voting system. Since 2015, she has served as Chancellor of Justice and acted as an ombudsperson.
Madise supports Ukraine in the war, saying that any peace settlement must be just, cannot reward the aggressor, and must not be decided without Ukraine’s involvement.
