The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against schools in the Kansas City district over their policies concerning transgender children.
The department alleges that school employees unlawfully “develop and implement gender transition plans for minors” without mandatory parental involvement. Examples cited include students using different names and/or pronouns for themselves.
The government argues that such policies violate the law because parents have an unequivocal right to know all information concerning their children. School officials, however, maintain that they are acting within the bounds of federal law.
The lawsuit is the latest in a series of actions by the Trump administration aimed at restricting the rights of transgender people. Earlier, the White House issued executive orders recognizing only two sexes at the federal level, restricted minors’ access to gender-affirming healthcare, and the Justice Department began seeking data on teenagers who had undergone hormone therapy from medical institutions.
