The father’s vitamin B12 levels were found to be important for reducing the risk of birth defects in children

Scientists have found that for having a healthy baby, it is not only the prospective mother but also the prospective father who should take vitamins before conception. The study was published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine.

A high level of vitamin B12 in a man before conception reduces the risk of birth defects in the child by more than half. In women, this level reduces the risk threefold. Scientists explain that B12 directly affects sperm quality and how the father’s DNA is read. At the same time, folic acid (vitamin B9) is particularly important for the woman during pregnancy.

It seems it’s time to stop placing responsibility for pregnancy and fetal health solely on women.
